Hi there!

This week we're taking a look at some planned cuts to the MBTA, and how they disproportionately affect lower income and communities of color.

What’s happening? Next month the MBTA board will vote on a proposal to eliminate weekend commuter rail service, close 25 bus routes (and several ferries), slash subway frequency by 20%, and stop the T at midnight.

Why does it matter? These cuts would disproportionately impact communities of color, preventing many workers from getting to and from their jobs. It would also lay off 800 MBTA workers.

MBTA“In a report, the coalition said the job cuts would disproportionately hit Black workers living in communities with high COVID-19 infection rates like Dorchester, Brockton, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roxbury, Revere, Lynn and Everett” (NBCBoston)

Absent public pressure, these cuts could pass.
