Hi there.
What's Happening?
Back in January, we covered the vote to cut MBTA service this spring. Since then, the MBTA has gone ahead and cut 20% of Green, Red, and Orange line services, and halted 9 bus routes. Leaving hundreds of thousands of riders with interrupted service.
Why Does it Matter?
People rely on the T to get to and from their jobs, their doctors appointments, and to just get around the city. It’s an essential service for Bostonians. Cutting these services is especially cruel because it disproportionately hurts lower income communities as driving may not be an option as it is for higher income communities.
While Governor Baker has defended the cuts as an act of financial necessity, activists and representatives have decried them as cruel and unnecessary because Massachusetts has received more than $1 billion in federal funding for transportation during the Covid-19 pandemic and these cuts would save, at most, $21 million.
